Decisions Decisions

Hey Everyone,
First off all, no real “news” yet, but see below for what’s basically going on and why the hell this is taking so long.

This is the way it worked with the manufacturing process…
I arrange for my design to be made up by a PCBA company, I supply the parts list and design files, They (the PCBA Company) then source the parts for the PSU, then they receive those parts and assemble the board, they then ship them to me and i ship them to you.

Back in May i thought we was at the “They ship the PSU’s to me” stage due to there emails saying “we are shipping”. However, they (the PCBA Company) hadn’t actually tested any of the boards they had made despite telling me they was going to be shipped within a few days. So i tell them that’s fine, get the boards tested and when that’s done, let me know when they will actually be shipped.
2 weeks pass and they contact me with “the boards have failed the test”, bare in mind that although the SaturnPSU design was new, both myself and the PCBA company had assembled a prototype board and confirmed that it was working without issue. So why is it now not working? Well, that is the mystery.
I double checked the information i sent them, they double checked the PCB’s and the soldering, everything looked fine, This went on for over a month, so i ask them to send me some “sample” boards and they did, a week later i receive the boards and test them, indeed, they didn’t work.
So i check the component values, there was one resistor that was wrong, I checked the datasheet and although it was wrong on the parts list i sent, it was correct according to the datasheet, so we figure maybe it was just that, i test it, it failed.

So i contact the manufacturer of the chip itself and explain everything, they asked me to perform some tests, which i did and they tests they suggested passed, they then said the design is without issue, the component values are correct it should work.

So just to see, i replace the chip on the sample board i received from the manufacturer with one from my own supply… it worked.

So i go back to the PCBA manufacturer and explain the situation, they said they will contact there supplier and see what they say. I have been in contact with the PCBA manufacturer once or twice a week for the last 2 months (ish) trying to get this crap sorted. They are waiting for information from there supplier.

So what happens when they get the information from there supplier? Well, this is where the decisions come in, either they offer a solution to the issue or we replace all of the chips on the PSU’s with either a new type of chip or ones from a new supplier.

100% Honesty, i have no idea how long this will take.
I am hounding them trying to get an answer, i wanted this to be over with in May, not October or later. Some people have asked “are they going to be shipped by Christmas?” I would LOVE to tell you yes, but i just cant do it. It breaks my heart every-time i post an update to this website because its hard to know im frustrating so many people by not being able to supply something that should have been a quick turn around off the back of an already successful DreamPSU campaign.

I swore i would never be one of those campaigns that just fails to deliver with some lame ass excuses. So we WILL get this sorted, i just wish i could give you an honest date as to when it will happen.

So what happens now?
We wait, and i hate to say it, but that’s the only thing i can do at the moment.

When i say this, i really mean it, but i want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for not ripping me to pieces and for the times you do contact me, its with courteousness and understanding, It really is making this horrible situation a little easier to deal with.

Thank you for your continued time and patience.

Endless Tunnel

Hey Everyone,
Nothing much to report unfortunately, I’m currently awaiting more information from the manufacturer of the chip we are using.
Its looking like the source the PSU manufacturer got the chip from has less than stellar reputation for supplying quality parts.
I have no idea when this information will arrive, but i will let you know as soon as.
This whole process so far has been nothing short of a nightmare, so i apologise unreservedly for that and really hope that this ends sooner rather than later.
Thank you all so much for your ongoing support, It really is appreciated.
I feel like I’m starting to sound like a broken record, so I’ll shut up now.
Hope you are all doing well.

Update ####

Hey everyone,

Just a quick update to say i haven’t forgotten about everyone.
I have been working my ass off to get everything sorted, we are 90% there.

I still don’t have a delivery ETA as frustrating as it is.

I will keep you updated on any big developments, so if i don’t post an update ever week or two, don’t panic, I’m still here and sorting this mess out.

I apologise for those missed comments, apparently indiegogo didn’t seem to think it was important to let me know.

I hope you’re all doing well.
Thank you so much for your ongoing patients and understanding, it’s very much appreciated, i know how easy it is to get frustrated by delays.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend, or what’s left of it 🙂

1 Down 1 To Go

Hey Everyone,

I’m a week late, I very much apologise for that, i have been awaiting an email from the chip manufacturer during this time and as there wasn’t much to update you all on, it seemed kind of redundant to post an update saying “nothing to update”.

As the title says, 1 issue down, 1 more to go, We have managed to fix one issue so far, but it has revealed another issue that was hiding in the background. I am just in contact now with the chip manufacturer who is sending over some information at some point about how to try and combat this issue. So fingers crossed, this solves the issue and we can move on and start the process of getting these shipped out to you 🙂

I will post an update as soon as there is something worthwhile posting.
Thank you for all your support and reassurances via email, it really is very much appreciated.
Chris.

Samples Received

Hey Everyone,
This update will be pretty small unfortunately, but i did promise one, so here goes.
I have received the samples, I have been looking them over and testing them for the last 2 days and gathering as much info as possible for Texas Instruments (the company that makes the chip on the power supplies), We had a little breakthrough but apparently there is some other underlying issue left, So we are one step further than we was a few days ago, Hooray.

I will post another update 1 week from now as Ti will be closed for the weekend and there is some more troubleshooting to do.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

On We March

Hey,
Sorry for the lack of updates, yet again.

First of all, Just to clarify, This update and all previous updates apply to both the DreamPSU and the SaturnPSU.

The manufacturer received the boards i sent them for testing and troubleshooting. They have checked them over and insist that those too don’t work, However, i have been using those boards for in my own consoles for the last 6 months without issue. So, where does this leave us? They have sent me 10 of each the DreamPSU and the SaturnPSU, I will then sit and test every single one of them and see if they work, if they work, we will be moving on with distribution. If they don’t, then the work will continue on trying to figure out what the hell has happened.

According to DHL, They samples they are sending me should be here on Wednesday the 11th I will spend the few days after fully testing them and then i will post an update on Friday the 13th (oh boy).

I really am thankful for all of your support, I know this is a short update and I’m sorry for that.

So it continues

OK, so unfortunately, not a lot has changed.

They have sent me information about why exactly the tests are failing is pretty much what i said in the last update, the PSU boots fine, but not every time.

As a result I have sent some working PSU’s so they can try and see what’s going on and why they are unable to produce a board they produces perfectly fine for the DreamPSU campaign.
I’m getting pretty tired of waiting around, so i cant imagine what its like for you guys, I really do apologize for all this bother.
Once they have received the prototypes and get some kind of update from them, i will let you know.
They should arrive at the manufacturer pretty soon, i sent them via 3-5 day service.

Just as a side note, this unfortunately affects both the SaturnPSU and DreamPSU.

Endless

Hey Everyone,
So here is the update for the SaturnPSU, Although i was able to get the sample boards working, after sending the information to the manufacturer, they was able to get a board working too, except, it only appears to work intermittently. They can test the board 10 times and it will work without issue, but then it might not work the next 2-3 times. Intermittent issues are a nightmare, we still are not sure why this is happening, the prototype i made up prior to manufacturing worked without fail every single time.
So this is the plan the manufacturer has emailed me and asked to confirm if its OK.

1. They are re-making the SaturnPSU PCB’s
2. They are going to try a different chip supplier.
3. Checking the assembly.

Obviously the big question everyone will want to know is, How long will this take / will the delay be?
Honest answer, I have no idea, This could be over with tomorrow, it could be (heaven forbid) another month. If we knew exactly what the issue was, then i would be able to give a more precise answer.
I understand this is frustrating not only for you, but myself also.
I just wanted this to go smoothly so i can start on all those requests that have been flooding my inbox about doing, such as the PS1 or PS2.

No matter how long it takes, we will sort this out and like i said before, you will receive your order, all i request is some patience and understanding.

I truly am sorry for this, and hope it doesn’t sour your view on the project.

Manufacturing Update & Saturns Birthday

Hey Everyone,

First of all, Happy 23rd birthday to the Sega Saturn in the US 😀

I received the sample boards from the manufacturer, We have spent 3 days trying to find the issue, and we think we have found it, without boring you all to much with the details, here is a word of advice, Don’t just immediately trust a datasheet.

I have sent the findings to the manufacturer and they will be testing them and i should hear back by Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
Hopefully everything will be fine and we can proceed with the manufacturing.

I’ll keep you updated as usual when something interesting or worth sharing happens 🙂

Have a great weekend, or what’s left of it.

Bank Holiday…

Hey Everyone
We are pretty sure the issue is resolved, However they are sending me some sample boards so i can check them over and make sure they fully work as expected.
Thanks to Bank Holiday Monday the sample boards wont be in my hands until at least Tuesday, despite being sat in a DHL warehouse not to far from me.
I will let you all know how it goes and give you an update as soon as there is something to update 🙂

Thank you all for your understanding and I hope you enjoy your weekend.
